Our Story

Suhail Hanif, Founder and social entrepreneur, was frustrated by the lack of opportunities and environment for disadvantaged and excluded youth trapped by inter-generational poverty. He verily believed that every child is capable to achieve, however the more fortunate are often given the best opportunities and environment, parental and traditional support structures that make that success much easier.

In 2007, Suhail made a passionate speech to a group of youth in the inner city of London. He told them that it was each individual’s responsibility to choose the direction their life would take. Each of their choices, he said, had the potential to either feed the cycle of inter generational poverty, or to break it. He also promised that they would not have to do it alone. He said, “If you have the will to make a difference for yourself, we will help create the environment.”

Standing in the listening crowd was a young man who had been in trouble with the law more than once. He was struggling to provide for his family, and he had all but lost hope. He had tried everything he could think of to find stable work. Disillusioned with the existing agencies that promised to provide a way out of the cycle of poverty, but which failed to deliver, he was on the brink of falling back into a criminal and dysfunctional life.

He heard our founders promise and saw a way out of his desperation. They sat down together, and they talked about the young man’s plan. He wanted to start a printing business. “It’s like electricity,” he said, “something everyone needs.” Running a business would enable him to care for his son and give him the kind of father he could look up to.

Suhail saw a raw passion and hunger to succeed. He agreed to help. The young man put in the time, hard work and dedication. Our founder pulled together the resources. The venture was begun, and it quickly became a rousing success.

But Suhail wasn’t going to stop there; he realised he was on to something. The young man’s story was proof that when like-minded people work together, they can make miracles. Since then, the Hand2Hand foundation has helped tens of thousands of young people throughout the country to explore and test their business ideas, write business plans, and start their own enterprises. It has helped others achieve goals in education, training and employment. It has proven, over and over again, that “a candle loses none of its light in lighting another candle” — that when people extend their hope and kindness to each other, the impact is exponential.

We as all growing organisations have seen much change and evolution. In the first years we worked to identify and support ‘at risk’ youth and then matching them with a mentor and private funding. As we developed we started to widen our criteria working with all disadvantaged youth.

Having exhausted capacity within our private funding model we wanted to scale our work knowing we could make a much bigger impact on the future of our youth and society’s ills. We wanted to create an entirely sustainable funding model so in 2015 we moved our existing private net wealth donors into corporate and commercial partnerships. This enabled us to vastly increase the number of youth we could help and at the same time take all support and management functions internally into the partner organisation, enabling a more leaner organisation concentrating on facilitating and empowering through our proven frameworks.

By the middle of 2016 our model became entirely sustainable allowing us to enable many more thousands of youth to realise their dreams. Hand 2Hand currently operate with over 500 commercial partnerships in 13 countries.
